With deep love and cherished memories, we announce the passing of Bernice E. Flores, who departed this life on June 10, 2023, at the remarkable age of 96.
Bernice was born on February 11, 1927, in Kenosha, Wisconsin, to Alva and Francis Eyre. A woman of strength, kindness, and boundless energy, Bernice lived a long and fulfilling life devoted to family, hard work, and creativity.
She married Harold L. Walton on June 11, 1945, and together they raised four children: John, Teri, Dennis, and Joseph Walton. Though the marriage ended in 1967, Bernice found love again and married Ismael “Sonny” Flores in June 26, 1969. With Sonny’s daughters, Juanita and Rosalinda, their blended family became a lively and loving group of seven.
Bernice and Sonny shared many ventures together, including working at Simmons in Lansing, Illinois, owning Star Real Estate Brokerage in San Antonio, Texas, and later running Salms Saloon in New Braunfels, Texas. Of all her roles, Bernice found the most joy in working as a manager for the school lunch program, where her passion for feeding others truly shined.
Cooking was more than a hobby—it was Bernice’s love language. Whether she was perfecting new recipes or preparing her well-loved dishes, she made everyone feel welcome at her table. Bernice also loved the thrill of gambling. She was always a winner! In quieter moments, she enjoyed crafting “little critters” from seashells and creating intricate diamond paintings, which she eagerly gifted to friends and family.
Bernice is survived by her husband, Ismael "Sonny", children John (LuJeanne) Walton of Sunset, Utah: Teri (Mike) Reel of West Point, Utah; Dennis (Barbara) Walton of Roy, Utah; two stepdaughters, Juanita Beverly of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Rosalinda Flores of Indianapolis, Indiana; 13-grandchildren, 32-great grandchildren, 22-great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son Joseph Walton, parents Alva and Francis, and many uncles, aunts, and cousins.
Bernice’s life was a testament to resilience, love, and the joy of simple pleasures. She will be deeply missed by her husband, her children, stepchildren, extended family, and all who were lucky enough to know her.
A private celebration of life was held by the family to honor her memory.
