Carol Miller Maxwell, 87, (1937 – 2025) passed away peacefully to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ on January 8th. She was a loving family member and friend to all who had the privilege of sharing life with her. She was easy to like, as she was gracious and compassionate, and a lot of fun. She was born in Woodsville, NH and was raised by her parents, Col. Edward G. Miller and Hazel Miller, alongside her wonderful six siblings who were also her lifetime friends.
Carol was the second oldest child in a busy, loving Army family. With the onset of WWII, the family moved frequently, including a rough ocean crossing from New York to Germany when she was only 10 years old, and later a move to Japan.
Carol graduated from high school in Rochester, NY. Many of her favorite childhood family memories revolved around simple times there, and in the surrounding areas, Ryegate, VT, Syracuse, NY, and Red Creek farm nearby.
Carol later attended Cornell University, where she majored in Home Economics, and she met her husband, Norman Ross. She readily adapted to the challenging role of being the wife of a Navy pilot and officer. Together they raised four children while moving frequently.
Although Carol was very humble, many referred to her as a Renaissance Woman, due to some experiences that were unusual in her era. She climbed Mt. Fuji in Japan. She was a private pilot. She made it look easy when she went back to school to attain her nursing degree, all while raising four active children. She was a horse woman, a singer in the choir, a leader of women’s groups. None of this is compared to the active role she played throughout her entire life, of a loving daughter, mother, sibling, grandmother, and finally great grandmother.
Prior to recently moving to Utah, Carol called Nashville, TN home for 30 years. She worked as a critical care nurse at the VA there for many years and later retired from Cigna. She was an active member of Protestant churches her whole life, including Johnson’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Brentwood, TN.
Carol was pre-deceased by her parents, Col E.G. Miller and Hazel Miller, and brothers Edward E. Miller, Donn Miller, Alan Miller.
Carol is survived by her children Norman Ross (Kelli), Daniel Ross, (Rose) Allan Ross, Janet McNulty (Mike), her grandchildren Steven Ross, Evan Ross (Ally), Ross McNulty, Sean McNulty, and great grandchildren Everett and Hazel Ross, and siblings Lt Col Barry Miller (Jan), Janet Imming (Dick), and Elizabeth Hesson (Bob).
A private viewing will be held on January 20th, at Aaron’s Mortuary, Clearfield, UT. A graveside service will be held at Blue Mountain Cemetery in Ryegate, Vermont later in 2025.
