Harold Wayne Duarte

August 26, 1962 — March 27, 2026

On March 27, 2026, Harold Wayne Duarte—known to most simply as Wayne—headed o? on his next great adventure after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He passed peacefully, surrounded by the people he loved most, likely already figuring out how to fix something wherever he landed. While our hearts are heavy, we can’t help but imagine him somewhere up there, fixing an engine that “just needed a little love” and probably telling someone how they should’ve done it in the first place.

Wayne was born on August 26, 1962, in Modesto, California, and moved with his family to St. Helena in 1967, where he grew up alongside his siblings and a whole lot of mischief. As a kid, Wayne joined the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Little League, and even played the trumpet in the school band—but it was what he did after responsibilities that really defined him. Weekends and summers meant finishing his paper route as fast as possible so he could get to the high school pool, leap fearlessly o? Zinfandel Bridge into the creek, or stroll into town in a black leather jacket… even when it was 105 degrees. No outing was complete without meeting up with friends at La Prima Pizza.

Wayne graduated from St. Helena High School in 1980 and soon after joined the Navy, where he spent six years as a diesel mechanic on military tugboats. It was a perfect fit—he had a natural gift for fixing things, a strong work ethic, and just enough grit to handle whatever came his way. In 1993, Wayne married the love of his life, Nancy Hester Duarte. Together, they built a life in Utah that was filled with laughter, loyalty, and a partnership that could only be described as “two peas in a pod.” If you knew them, you knew—they were simply meant to be.

Wayne’s greatest pride and joy, however, was his family. He was blessed with five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, and they were the center of his world. He never missed a school event, a game, or a chance to cheer them on—loudly and proudly. If there was a “#1 Fan” title to be claimed, Wayne already had it locked in.

He loved football—especially the Raiders—and was rarely seen without his legendary LA Raiders trench coat. Rain, shine, or perfectly normal weather, that coat made the trip. He was also a devoted Elvis fan, collecting memorabilia and keeping the King’s spirit alive in his own unique way.

Wayne spent 22 years working for Utah Waste Management before striking out on his own as a mobile mechanic. He took pride in his work, his independence, and the chance to help people whenever they needed it. After retiring in 2023, he devoted himself fully to what mattered most: spoiling his grandchildren every chance he got—and probably bending a few rules while doing it.

Wayne had a heart as big as his personality. He was kind, loyal, and deeply devoted to his family. He didn’t just love them—he showed up for them, again and again, without hesitation.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Nancy; his step son Victor Hester; his five grandchildren; eight great- grandchildren; his sisters Christine Pellhum, Jenise Haner, and Cheri Burgess; his step-siblings Kim Wolke, Kip Duarte, and Kelly Duarte; as well as nieces, nephews, and extended family who will carry his memory forward.

Wayne will be deeply missed—more than words can say—but we take comfort in knowing that somewhere, he’s wearing that Raiders coat, listening to Elvis, and keeping everything running just the way it should.
