Jean Helfer DeVoe, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, passed away on July 13, 2025, in Ogden, Utah at the age of 88. She was born on September 5, 1936, in Walshville, Illinois to Walter “Cotton” and Emolene (Brown) Helfer. She was the oldest of seven children.
Jean graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1955. She married Wes Shelton on October 8, 1955. They were later divorced after eighteen years of marriage. In June 1974, she met her soulmate, Dean DeVoe. After a brief and whirlwind three-week courtship, they eloped and were married in Elko, Nevada on June 29, 1974. They were later sealed in the Ogden LDS Temple.
Jean had a twenty-eight-year career in banking, and she retired in 1996 due to health reasons.
She is survived by her five children: Steven Shelton, Gunnison, Utah, Scott DeVoe, Ogden, Utah, Susan (Eric) Smith, Hooper, Utah, Sharon “Shari” Bowman, Ogden, Utah, and Michael (Desiree) DeVoe, Ogden, Utah; sisters: Darlene Smith, Dean Halleman, and Kathy Helfer. She had 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Dean; her parents; and three brothers: Darrell, Dennis, and Kendal Helfer.
There is now a happy family reunion going on in Heaven where there is much joy and happiness, many hugs and dancing -- there must be dancing!
Friends may visit with family at a Viewing on Thursday, July 17, 2025, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Aaron’s Mortuary, 496 24th Street, Ogden, Utah. Funeral service will be held on Friday, July 18, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Eccles Park Ward, 1029 26th Street, Ogden, with a Viewing from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior at the church.
