Michael Curran, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and beloved community figure, passed away on September 5, 2025, in Ogden, Utah. He was 69 years old.
Born on March 13, 1956, in Rochester, New York, Michael’s life was marked by a deep commitment to faith, family, and service. From his early years working on the Joseph Smith and Martin Harris Church Farms on the Hill Cumorah to his mission in Independence, Missouri—where he witnessed many miracles—his devotion to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints remained a guiding force throughout his life.
Michael’s professional journey was as diverse as it was impactful. A gifted 3rd generation pastry chef, he had the honor of contributing his culinary talents to the 2002 Winter Olympics. His expertise also led him to become a corporate bakery trainer for all Smith’s grocery stores west of the Mississippi River. His passion for baking also found expression through entrepreneurship as the owner of Tommies Donuts.
Beyond the kitchen, Michael made significant contributions to the world of sports and entertainment. He served as a varsity football coach and mentored both men’s and youth indoor football teams with dedication and heart. His leadership extended into professional sports as the owner of two indoor arena football teams—the Utah Catzz and the Utah Saints—where he fostered athletic excellence and community spirit. In 2004, Michael was inducted into the Minor League Hall of Fame.
Michael also explored creative pursuits in film and television. He appeared in movies such as Halloween 6 and Siege at Marion, showcasing yet another facet of his multifaceted life.
A man of many talents and interests, Michael found joy in golf, fly fishing, painting, and writing poetry. These hobbies reflected his appreciation for beauty in both nature and art—a balance that enriched his life and those around him.
Above all else, Michael cherished his role within his family. He is survived by his loving wife Shanna; children Andrew and Katie Curran (from a previous marriage); granddaughter Emma Sumsion; sister Gail Coleman; and brother Patrick Curran. He was preceded in death by his father Walter Curran; mother Carolyn Curran; and sister Dixie Bullock.
Michael had a profound impact on countless lives through his mentorship and compassion. He loved “his football boys,” taking great pride in helping them grow into successful young men—a legacy that will endure through their achievements and memories.
He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to those who mourn his passing and inspiration to those who carry forward the values he lived by. A celebration of Michael’s life will be announced at a later date.
