Norman C Hargaray

September 21, 1938 — August 15, 2008

PLAIN CITY - Norman Hargaray, 69, passed away at his home on Friday, August 15, 2008, after a fight with cancer, his wife Carolyn by his side.

Better known as "Stormin' Norman" among family and fishing friends, Norm's nickname was his life's motto. He fervently stormed through his life on earth into his life after, confident and fearless, prepared to be free of all physical distress. Norm was born in Peru, Illinois on September 21, 1938 to Carlyle "Boots" Ruppert and Geraldine Weiger. Geri later married Elmer "Bud" Hargaray and they resided in Oregon where Norm discovered his passions for hunting, fishing and even skipping school to improve upon his outdoorsman skills. Relocating to California, Norm attended La Puente High School, then joined the United States Navy where he served a 20-year career.

Norm married Dolores Lara. Their son, Robert, was born in 1958. They later divorced. In 1962 Norm married Elizabeth "Betty" Kirkover and they enjoyed a 40-year marriage until Betty's passing with cancer in 2002. Norm and Betty had three children, Michelle, Cynthia and William. Throughout Norm's Navy career they resided in California, Hawaii and family favorite, Kodiak, AK, where Norm hunted, fished and acquired his most valued hunting trophies, a Kodiak brown bear and bull moose.

Norm honorably retired in 1976 from the US Navy as a Chief Petty Officer with high ratings of outstanding leadership, Bronze Star awards, commendations in search and rescue missions, and admirable recognition for his tour of duty in Vietnam. After Navy retirement, Norm opened "Norm's Coins and Collectibles" in Loomis, CA. He enjoyed fishing in Fort Bragg, CA and operated a commercial fishing vessel with his son Bill. Norm was a member of the Freemasons since 1979.

On route to a hunting trip in Colorado, Norm was introduced by his cousin to Carolyn Thorpe Maughan. They were married June 2, 2005, and settled in Plain City, Utah. They enjoyed traveling, fishing, visiting family and friends, gardening and canning. Norm was a popular addition as "Papa Norm" with Carolyn's children and grandchildren.

Norm is survived by his wife Carolyn; parents Bud and Geri Hargaray; siblings Sandra, Jan, Linda, Susie, Patty, Tommy; children, Bobby Hargaray, Michelle Hargaray, Cindy (Brian) Foreman, Bill (Ida) Hargaray; six grandchildren, Audrey, Samantha, Calvin, Kourtney, Nolan, Annaliese; and one great-grandchild Jerry Dominic. Step-children, Mike (Reba) Thorpe, Greg (Jen) Thorpe, Dawn (Doug) Jennings, Wendy (Justin) Scott; 12 grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Tyler, Derek, Devon, Matt, Rachel, Kiera, Allie, Kameron, Dax, James, Karson.
