Sheila Green Darsie died in her daughter’s home on Monday, July 6, 2025 in Layton, Utah.
She was born in Presque Isle, Maine, on January 15, 1944, to Edward M. Green and Esther Freedman. She had one older brother, Stephen L. Green. She is survived by her daughters Deborah of Kent, Washington and Alyson (Ken) and her beloved grandchildren, Ben, Meghan, Aaron and Lauren, all of Layton, Utah. She was preceded in death by her father, mother and brother.
Her grandchildren were the joy of her life, prompting her to move to Utah to be closer to them even though she absolutely hated the hot summer weather. Her hope is that the memories of their times together will hold a special place in their hearts.
Sheila had two special furry friends in her adult life – Missy and Ginger. They were the loves of her life. Sheila and Ginger were Delta Society Pet Partners as she passed therapy dog certification. The two of them went to hospitals, school classrooms and set up a “Paws to Read” program at a library.
Reading was a passion in Sheila’s life. For almost 9 years she met with children at Sand Springs Elementary (Layton) and spent half hour sessions in grades 1-6, reading books and encouraging discussions. She was fondly known as “Grammy Sheila” by the kids of the school to whom she read. She was passionate about sharing her love of books with children and encouraging them to think about what they were reading to understand it for content.
Sheila had many jobs in her life – she worked as a nanny, in retail, as a legal secretary in a law office, as a technical secretary in a laboratory and the job she enjoyed the most – a teaching assistant and reading specialist.
Other memories that Sheila held dear: Typing a West Virginia University graduate student’s dissertation, learning more about artificial insemination of cattle than one could ever want to know; Helping to set up a rape crisis center in Austin, Minnesota; Fishing at Lake Somerville for white bass with her civil engineering bosses at Texas A&M; Serving as a volunteer dispatcher, occasional driver of Truck 128 (never backing into station!) and running the epic Fish Fry for Cleveland Township Volunteer Fire Department in Elkhart, Indiana; Volunteering for Hospice in Glens Falls, New York; Watching the Adirondack Red Wings hockey games which gave her the chance to meet players before they advanced to Detroit; Volunteering at the USO at Sea-Tac Airport in Seattle, Washington; Reading to children wherever she lived.
Sheila was honored to have many supportive colleagues and friends across the country and thanks them for their long friendships and good times. There are more people she wanted to thank than there is room for but she wanted to offer heartfelt thanks to Kent and Vickie Cravens for the hours they have spent at the Family Legacy Center, helping her discover that she did have a family tree! Friendships formed while reading at Sand Springs Elementary wereso meaningful for her. Special thanks to Janet Newbold (Syracuse, Utah) and Wendy McCloy (Farmington, Utah) for the years of love and service you showed her. She loved her shared history with lifelong friends, especially Debbie Carter (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida). Thank you to Intermountain Home Care and Hospice for the care you showed Sheila in the last months of her life.
A Celebration of Life Open House will be held on Tuesday, July 29th from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Davis Conference Center (in room Twilight 2)) in Layton, Utah. In lieu of flowers, Sheila would suggest a donation in her memory be made to Best Friends Animal Society at bestfriends.org/donate/remembering-an-animal-lover or to Reading Education Assistance Dogs at therapyanimals.org/give then select the R.E.A.D. program.
